Eddie was a Bramley player who stood in at the last minute to play on the right wing when Oldham visited Headingley to play Leeds on Christmas Day 1942. Eddie, along with team-mate Joe Desborough answered the call when Oldham turned up with only nine players. Another player, a Welsh soldier on leave, also played with Oldham fielding only twelve players.
