Joe was a Bramley player who stood in at the last minute to play at prop forward when Oldham visited Headingley to play Leeds on Christmas Day 1942. Joe, along with team-mate Eddie Murphy answered the call when Oldham turned up with only nine players. Another player, a Welsh soldier on leave also played with Oldham fielding only twelve players.
